What is Google Analytics 4 (GA4)?

GA4 (Google Analytics 4) is the latest version of the analytics software from Google. Released in October 2020, it has similarities to the current iteration of the platform – Universal Analytics in that website data is tracked, however the way that data is presented is different. GA4 was designed and built to operate across platforms (web + app), does not rely exclusively on cookies and uses an event-based data model to deliver user-centric measurement with a focus on privacy. Thus, GA4 is uniquely positioned for the future of the web.

The deadline to migrate to GA4 is July 1st, 2023; Google announced that GA4 will be the only option for businesses’ Google Analytics measurement as of this date. That gives you just under a year to prepare for the change, and understand how to make the most of the new GA4 model. Due to the fact that Universal Analytics will cease to gather data as of July 1, 2023, and all its historical data will become unavailable as of Jan 1, 2024 it is of top priority to start the migration to GA4 sooner rather than later; especially if you are running any type of digital marketing efforts.

Cookie-based measurement is becoming obsolete

With GA4, you can understand your users across multiple platforms without relying on cookies. In the coming years, cookie-based tracking will become less reliable and less available, so this feature is essential for marketers. Essentially, GA4 provides a single point of truth for tracking all activity on the same property.

GA4 will have a fully integrated measurement model that isn’t fragmented by platform or segmented into separate sessions giving you a complete picture of the customer lifecycle. Now, GA4 will let you:

With this feature, you can follow your users as they navigate through your funnel, and track where they’re converting or dropping off.

More cross platform data for campaign optimizations and reporting

Analytics insights can be used to optimize ad campaigns by integrating GA4 with other Google products, such as Google Ads. Furthermore, GA4 delivers user-centric measurement through an event-based data model. This means that traditional campaign key performance indicators (KPIs) like page views are collectively grouped as “events”. This will greatly simplify how we track and report data.

Upgrading from UA to GA4 will not cause data loss in Universal Analytics; however, Google states “Until July 1, 2023, you can continue to use and collect new data in your Universal Analytics properties. After July 1, 2023, you’ll be able to access your previously processed data in your Universal Analytics property for at least six months.”
